Reps probe peacekeeping funds

The House of Representatives Committee on Defence said on Tuesday that it had commenced an investigation into how “several billions of naira” voted for peace keeping operations in Liberia and Dafur over the years by the Federal Government were spent.

The Chairman of the committee, Mr. Oluwole Oke, confirmed in Abuja that the Minister of Defence, Mr. Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN); and the Minister of Finance, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, had been summoned in connection with the investigation.

Kayode and Akanga are to appear before the committee on Tuesday next week.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria , Mr. Lamido Sanusi; the Accountant-General of the Federation, Mr. Ibrahim Dankwambo; the Director-General, Budget Office, Dr Bright Okogun; and Managing Director of Unity Bank, Mr. Falalu Bello, are also to appear before the committee on the same date.

In addition to explaining how the peace keeping funds were utilised, Kayode in particular, will speak on the implementation of the capital vote for the Ministry of Defence in the 2010 budget.
