Osun PDP aspirant sues for internal democracy

A governorship aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State, Chief Gbenga Owolabi, has sued for the conduct of credible primaries through the practice of internal democracy so as to produce the best candidate for the party during the 2011 general elections.

Owolabi, who is also the incumbent Chairman of Ife East Local Government Area of the state, spoke against the backdrop of the alleged endorsement of Senator Iyiola Omisore as the favoured candidate by some party elder’s.

He stated that democracy should be practiced without cohesion, adding that the choice of the people to elect their leaders was paramount in order to enshrine democratic ideals.

The aspirant, while acknowledging the important role played by the party elder’s in the pursuit of peace, noted that it would not be to the best interest of the party for there to be imposition of candidate.

He stressed that the idea of settling for a particular candidate was retrogressive, especially in a growing democracy.

He said, “This is democracy and there should be free choice, freedom to associate and do things without cohesion. We should provide avenue for people to freely express themselves. The people will make their choice. The idea of selection and imposition are not democratic and it is retrogressive. Osun State stakeholders are exposed, experience, intelligent and fair minded.

The aspirant said he was in the governorship race in order to ensure that the people benefitted from quality governance, adding that politics was all about what could change the society.
