NDLEA discovers 43-hectare Indian hemp farm

Chairman, (NDLEA) Ahmadu Giade

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency said it had discovered a 43-hectare Indian hemp farm in a village in the Ilejemeje Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

The state Commandant of the anti-narcotics agency, Mr. Akingbade Bamidele, told newsmen on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti that the discovery was made following a tip-off by vigilant villagers.

According to him, three middle-aged men, working on the farm when the officers and men of the agency got there were arrested.

He said the suspects were assisting the NDLEA in its investigation.

He said the suspects disclosed during interrogations that they were not the owners of the farm but were engaged as labourers without knowing that the plants were Indian hemp.

Bamidele said the entire farmland had been sealed off, while the Indian hemp on it would be destroyed at a later date.

He added that the farmland and the structure on it would be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The commandant reminded the residents of the area and farmers in the state to refrain from allowing unknown persons to farm on their land.
