FRSC frowns on party logo as number plates

FRSC, Lagos State Sector Commander, Mr Jonas Agwu

The Federal Road Safety Commission said in Lagos on Wednesday that it would clampdown on motorists using party logos and stickers as number plates.

The Lagos State Sector Commander of FRSC, Mr. Jonas Agwu, said at a news conference that erring motorists would be charged to court and their vehicles impounded.

“The command wishes to state that it is illegal, unuathorised and a contravention of the relevant traffic laws for any vehicle to use stickers in place of a number plate.

“The trend in recent times has become a source of worry to the command and we are going to tackle it headlong as from today,” he said.

Agwu said the clampdown became imperative in view of the increasing use of political campaign stickers on vehicles “in total disregard of the provisions of the relevant traffic regulations.”

He said drivers with plastic or defaced number plates or vehicles without number plates would also be arrested.

On commuter manifests, Agwu said violators would be made to face the wrath of the law.

He said commercial drivers’ non-compliance had made identification of accident victims difficult.

``Some of the commercial drivers operate without passengers’ manifests and in some cases; they contain incomplete names, addresses and telephone numbers.

“Section 51 of the Road Traffic Regulations says that every commercial driver carry passengers’ manifest.

“It helps in identifying victims at accident scenes,” Agwu said.

Agwu disclosed that 528 motorists were arrested between January and September this year for using fake number plates as against 821 and 1,364 arrested in 2008 and 2009 respectively.
