‘NYSC should utilise corps members
The Nigerian Institution of Mechanical Engineers has called on the National Youth Service Corps not to deploy corps members, who studied engineering, to secondary schools to teach science subjects.
Instead, the institute asked the NYSC to deploy engineers, who are corps members, to relevant industries in order to acquire practical skills.
The President, Nigerian Institution of Engineers, Mr. A B Oyedepo, who spoke at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday, explained that it was an anomaly to post graduate engineers to secondary schools to teach science subjects.
Oyedepo made this observation at the inauguration of the OAU students‘ chapter of the engineering association.
He said for Nigeria to attain industrial greatness, graduate corps members should be posted to industries relevant to their courses of study so as to provide the basic manpower for industrial growth.
Oyedepo said a symbiotic relationship must exist between Nigerian industries and Ivory towers in order to give direction to the country‘s quest for industrialisation.
He said, ”The situation of things has changed from what it used to be. We now have people in the industries coming to teach in the universities to help impart their vast knowledge and experience in our students.
”As a fallout of that relationship, the problems of the industries are brought into the classroom for those in the academia to examine and come up with practical solutions.”
The Director, Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Office, O.A.U. Prof. L.O Adekoya, in his remarks, urged the students to see their induction into the students‘ chapter of the body as a good development needed to galvanise their careers.
