The advisory list released by the Farida Waziri-led Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), containing names of politicians and other prominent Nigerians at the weekend, is another issue agitating the minds of many. It was one publication which has stirred the hornet’s nest with a number of persons seeking to know what exactly the commission seeks to achieve.
Events to unfold in the next couple of days will reveal the extent of the controversy that the list has generated in the polity. What makes the publication to be of concern to many, is the perception that it attempts to tread the path that the commission trod in 2007 when Nuhu Ribadu, was the commission’s chairman. Ribadu’s list caused a serious uproar prior to the 2007 general election as it was accompanied by a number of controversial acts. Some of the victims were the incumbent governor of Rivers State, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, who was substituted by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the gubernatorial candidate of Rivers State with Celestine Omehia following the inclusion of his name on the list. Amaechi had to fight his way to the Supreme Court before the indictment was dismissed for lack of cogent and verifiable reasons. Another person was Peter Okocha, Action Congress (AC) governorship candidate at the 2007 general election in Rivers State who was disqualified but got a reprieve through judicial intervention.Read More:http://www.thisdayonline.info/nview.php?id=186145
