DSTV Mobile invests $100m in Nigeria, others

DSTV Mobile, a division of MultiChoice, has said that it has invested over $100m (N1.5bn) in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Namibia in the last four years.

The General Manager, DSTV Mobile in Nigeria and Ghana, Mr. Mayo Okunola, made the disclosure on Wednesday at a meeting of the Nigerian-South African Chamber of Commerce in Lagos.

Okunola said that investments were made in getting the right contents, having a broadcast network, channels and the right to put the contents on mobile phones.

He said, “We have a good chunk of transmitting infrastructure in Nigeria because we have 22 sites, and that is more than other countries.

“The Nigerian market is a substantial base. It is the biggest market we have and 60 to 70 per cent of our subscribers are from Nigeria.”

Okunola said that DSTV Mobile had been inaugurated in 10 cities and would be offered without subscription until March 31, 2011, noting that two more cities would be added.

According to him, the company intends to employ more engineers to manage its sites, saying that the skills in Nigeria needed to be developed.

“The engineers here are more focused on analogue rather than digital. We can’t be flying in skills and knowledge from elsewhere.

“We will ensure that when our engineers come from South Africa, they train and develop their local counterparts because we are moving to a new era,” Okunola said.

He said that DSTV would continue to spend more in making sure that it had a solid infrastructure.

Okunola said “It is a new technology and good infrastructure must be put in place to avoid breakdown of service.

“And, as the business grows, we will add more transmission and distribution sites and hope to extend it to more service providers.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that DSTV Mobile was inaugurated in 2005 in an effort to explore broadcast television on the mobile phone.
