Fashola’s wife advises women on breast cancer

The wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Abimbola Fashola, has called for increased breast screening among Nigerian women as part of efforts to reduce the scourge of the disease.

Fashola who spoke at the inauguration of a mammography centre, donated by the MTN Foundation to the General Hospital, Marina, in Lagos on Monday, said early detection of the disease, which is often hereditary, could help reduce breast cancer-related deaths.

”Every woman should take a breast cancer screening once a year. Every man or woman should compel a woman to go for a mammography test. We are all affected by the disease one way or the other. It is hereditary. Anyone with a family history of breast cancer should watch out,” she said.

She stated that the mammography unit would complement the state government’s breast cancer screening initiative.

Also the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr.Ahmid Balogun, said that with the new centre, the efforts to encourage early detection and treatment of the disease would yield the desired results.
