PHCN explains cause of outage in Ibadan

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Dugbe Business District, Ibadan, has explained the reasons behind the prolonged power outage affecting customers at Bodija, Agodi GRA, Ikolaba and environs.

A statement by the Senior Manager, Public Affairs of the district, Mr. Tokunbo Peters, explained that the power outage was as result of multiple faults on the State House 11KV feeder, which supplies electricity to the affected areas.

According to him, the problem was further compounded by the breakdown of the breaker, which controls the feeder at the Agodi 11/33KV Injection substation.

He said, “Since the fault occurred about two weeks ago, PHCN engineers have been working round the clock to reactivate the feeder and just when power supply was about to be restored, the rainstorm of Wednesday, October 20, /Thursday October 21, 2010, wrecked serious havoc on the network damaging the State House feeder.

Peters said 50 high tension concrete poles and 24 low tension poles were damaged at various locations in the district by the rainstorm.

He said, “In one of the locations, a communication mast collapsed on the State House feeder, while trees were also uprooted and flung on the feeder by the storm.”

He added, “PHCN is not unmindful of the inconveniences and discomfort created by the power outage and has thus been able to reactivate some portions of the feeder and restored power supply to some of the customers while concerted efforts are still on to replace all the damaged installations on the entire length of the feeder, with a view to restoring power supply to all the customers.
