Supreme Court offers settlement option in Lagos, Magodo residents land dispute

TWENTY-TWO years after they entered into a legal battle with the Lagos State Government over the Magodo land acquisition, members of the Shangisha Landlords Association may now heave a sigh of relief as the Supreme Court has directed the state government to settle the matter out of court.
The nation’s apex court at the resumed hearing of the matter recently directed the state authorities to give the affected members of the association alternative plots in place of their property that was demolished on the prompting of the state several years ago.
A five-man panel of Supreme Court justices, presided over by Justice Mahmud Mohammed in the directive stated that an out-of-court settlement was necessary for the sake of fairness before it enters its own judgment.
