THE Osun State government has spent about N2.2billion on electrification projects in rural communities of the state this year. Besides, it has sunk over 190 boreholes for the benefit of rural dwellers in UNICEF/EU assisted community projects in the state.
The state Commissioner for Water Resources, Energy and Rural Development, Prince Adesoji Olarewaju Baderin who disclosed this yesterday, noted that the electricity and water schemes had impacted positively on the lives of the grassroots populace.
Baderin who spoke while giving the scorecard of his ministry in Osogbo however blamed the irregular supply of pipe-borne water on aged facilities and pipelines at the state Water Corporation, Ede.
He said despite the challenge facing the ministry in the area of water distribution to citizens , the government still succeeded in making well-treated potable water available each time water is pumped from the major waterworks to the populace.
He revealed that the state is giving the expansion and upgrading of the Ede water works urgent attention to meet the increasing demands of the population.
“In a determined effort at providing potable water to the citizens, the state government purchased water treatment chemicals worth about N306,444,000 for the use of the water corporation and other mini water schemes,” he said.
He explained that the government was already exploring alternative power generation to enhance regular supply of power for industrial and domestic consumption.
