ASUU Strike: Lecturers Ignore Council Directive To Resume Lectures At ANSU

AGAINST the directive given by the Management of Anambra State University (ANSU), Uli, that academic and other activities should resume tomorrow (Monday), ANSU- ASUU has charged its members to stay away from lecture halls, thereby deepening the crisis rocking State Universities in the South-East geo political zone.

Besides, ANSU-ASUU notified management that it is only the senate and the Committee of Deans, acting on behalf of senate, that have the exclusive right to announce reopening of the University, insisting that management has no such powers.

In a release signed by both the ANSU-ASUU Chairman and Secretary, Jaja C. Nwanebgo and Julius Ofordile respectively, and made available to journalists in Awka, the union expressed shock and dismay at what they termed misrepresentations of events and discussion of the revered elders at a meeting held at the ‘Ime obi’ of Obi of Onitsha.

ANSU-ASUU however charged members to ignore the release signed and circulated by the Registrar to resume lectures, following the intervention of eminent elders and people of Anambra State towards peaceful resolution of the 4-month impasse pitching ASSU and the Southeast governors.

The release titled, ‘Re-position of Anambra people and directive on the current crisis in Anambra State University,’ and copied to the Pro-Chancellor and vice Chancellor of the Institution, also noted, “it also does not show any sign of respect for the credibility of the distinguished persons so mentioned in the press release, who abandoned every important commitments to come to discuss, so as to find solution to the problem.

“It is shocking that the Registrar, who never attended the meeting, held at Obi palace, where some decisions were taken, now wrote and distorted all the decisions reached at the meeting,” the release stated.

The Union maintained that what stood between them and final resolution of the impasse was the councils’ refusal to put their deliberations and its offer in writing, while also dodging to make commitment on full implementation, which they claimed was the basis for the strike.

The Union strongly appealed to Council to take the part of peace and seek an amicable resolution of the matter, adding that as soon as their demands were met, the branch executive would seek the permission of ASUU National Executive Council to immediately suspend the strike.
