While Amos Adamu is focusing on appealing the three-year ban imposed on him and other executives by FIFA last week, Nigerians are left to wonder what effect the sanction will have on the game in the country. Seen as a the force behind many serving sports officials, some have predicted a sweeping change across sports administration in the country.
"Adamu for now is a finished product, a lot of people would definitely have to go down with him; people that ordinarily would not have gotten to certain positions but are there now know they do not have any covering anymore for themselves and sooner or later they will be kicked out," a contestant in the last Nigeria Football Federation election, who craved anonymity, said.
Veteran journalist and CAF Media co-ordinator, Paul Bassey, however, chooses to see the effect of the ban from another angle. For him, Adamu's ban is more of a loss than a gain to the country's sports, as he argued that Nigeria has lost a voice in international football.
"Besides this suspension being a personal tragedy for Adamu, it is also a big blow to Nigeria as a country because with Adamu on both the executive committees of CAF and FIFA, Nigeria had a voice in international football," said Bassey.
"A country needs to unite behind a very popular person for him to reach the heights that Adamu attained in world football. It will now take a very long time for Nigeria to get a person into such a position again."
