Ahead of next week’s announcement of the consensus presidential candidate to fly the flag of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party for the north, there are indications that the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) has renewed its overtures to the former military president, Ibrahim Babangida to pick its ticket if the consensus project does not favour him.
Mr Babangida is being considered alongside three other presidential contenders by the Northern Political Leaders Forum (NPLF), to contest the PDP primaries against President Goodluck Jonathan.
The others contenders are former vice president, Atiku Abubakar; the immediate past National Security Adviser, Aliyu Gusau; and Governor Bukola Saraki of Kwara State. The outcome of the search by a 12-member committee headed by former finance minister, Adamu Ciroma may be made public on Monday November 22.
However, a source in the opposition ANPP said some chieftains of the party have begun fresh moves to draft Mr Babangida into the party to contest the presidency in the event that he is not picked as the consensus candidate.
Before the exit of the former national chairman of the ANPP, Edwin Ume-Ezeoke in September, there were reports of subtle moves to woo Mr Babangida. According to the reports, the moves were partly a source of the crisis plaguing the party then.
