The Furore Over Dissolution Of Local Councils

THE reported fracas in Ekiti State over the control of local councils is yet another demonstration of the potentially disruptive politics of local councils administration. Inter-party violence reportedly broke out during the swearing in of new councils’ administrators in Ekiti state. There have also been issues with regard to local councils in Edo and Ondo states. The controversy that has arisen is unhealthy, having as it were, the capacity to distract governments from focusing on their primary responsibilities.  It is important in all the cases that the various stakeholders – governors, lawmakers and party members abide by the rule of law.

In particular, they should allow the courts to examine the issues and make necessary pronouncements.  This could have prevented the violence in parts of Ekiti State. There is need also to avoid the kind of stalemate that occurred between the Federal Government and the Lagos State Government, during the Olusegun Obasanjo administration. There is no doubt that the political parties – mainly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) are involved in a corrosive power struggle.  This however needs not degenerate into an unpleasant situation whereby the winner insists on taking it all, without consideration for the long-suffering masses who are often the victims of selfish politicking.
