Kwara State Governor, Bukola Saraki
The succession crisis rocking the Nigeria Governors’ Forum deepened on Monday, with its outgoing Chairman, Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki reportedly rooting for his Gombe State counterpart, Alhaji Danjuma Goje, as his successor.
The latest development may worsen the crisis that had been generated by Friday’s adoption of Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, by some governors as Saraki’s successor.
The governors of Edo and Kano states, Adams Oshiomhole and Ibrahim Shekarau respectively, have already said they were not part of the arrangement.
The NGF is expected to hold a crucial meeting on the succession dispute in Abuja on Wednesday (tomorrow).
THE PUNCH gathered that Saraki had been engrossed in discreet moves to ensure the emergence of a northern governor as his successor. The Kwara State governor was said to have reached out to some of his colleagues in the North, asking them to help him realise the objective.
But, a faction of the NGF opposed to Saraki and led by his Benue State counterpart, Mr. Gabriel Suswam, was said to have got wind of the plot and moved to thwart it.
Friday night’s declaration of Daniel as Saraki’s successor was said to have been a deft move by Suswam’s group to stop Saraki from announcing Goje as the next chairman of the forum.
