The controversy over zoning heightened on Monday as the Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation and the Northern Political Leaders’ Forum traded words on the issue.
While the NPLF warned that the Peoples Democratic Party would lose the 2011 elections if it rejected zoning, the Goodluck/Sambo Presidential Campaign Organisation urged the forum’s members ,whom it described as ‘elder statesmen’ to stop fanning the embers of disunity.
The forum, at a news conference in Abuja by its Chairman, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, said the PDP could not, in all honesty, pretend that there was no zoning.
“If they (PDP members) pretend that there is no zoning, then they may pay a price of pretending. The cost of setting aside zoning will be shown by the results of the election,” Ciroma said.
The former minister explained that the group’s insistence on zoning was based on truth and fairness. He argued that it would be wrong for the PDP to “change the rules in the middle of the game.”
Ciroma , who warned that the PDP’s foundation would be shaken if the arrangement was abandoned, asked, “If I reach an agreement with you and you depart from it unilaterally, how can I trust you again?”
Asked if members of the NPLF would leave the PDP if zoning was abandoned, he replied, “When the PDP calls its primaries, it will show whether the majority in the party respects fairness and justice or it can turn around anybody just to do what it pleases.
