Stephen Keshi
Former Nigeria defender Chikelue Iloenyosi has hailed the appointment of another ex-international Samson Siasia, as the new Super Eagles coach, saying he was a better choice than former Togo and Mali coach, Stephen Keshi
The Holland 2005 U-20 World Cup silver-winning coach was grilled along with Keshi for the Eagles‘ top job by the NFF‘s technical committee, but the Bayelsa-born tactician emerged tops after the interview.
”I am very happy for his (Siasia) appointment because he‘s going to give Nigeria what they want. Siasia is very good and the players love him. I played under Keshi and he is a good coach too but Siasia is better,” the former defender said on the telephone few minutes after Siasia‘s appointment.
He called for support for Siasia, who as a player won a bronze medal at the U-20 World Cup with the Flying Eagles in 1985 and also won the 1994 African Nations Cup with the Eagles.
”He should be given a free hand to operate now that we are in crisis, we need a coach who will bring us back to where we truly belong in football and I believe Siasia is the right man to do that,” the former Germany-based player said.
Iloenyosi however refused to comment on the composition and competence of the technical committee of the NFF who conducted the interview saying, ”What matters is that they have made the right decision. I don‘t want to talk about them (technical committee). What we should do now is how to support Siasia so that he can succeed as coach of the Eagles.”
