Jonathan urges public, private sector to improve productivity

THE President, Goodluck Jonathan

THE President, Goodluck Jonathan has urged the country’s public and private sector organisations to strengthen their management capabilities to enable them improve on their productivity.
He made the call at the 11th National Productivity Day Celebration and Conferment of National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) Award on some deserving individuals and organisations.
``It is especially important for the organisations to strengthen their management capabilities to drive productivity improvements,’’ he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that 20 individuals and six organisations were conferred with the National Productivity Order of Merit Award.
Jonathan, represented by Chief Emeka Wogu, the minister of Labour and Productivity, said the concept of productivity must be reduced from the theoretical to the practical level.
``We must maximise efficiency by doing things right. To achieve effectiveness, we must do the right things. Both are important to creating value in the economy,’’ he said.
Jonathan promised that government would continue to improve on the development of an enabling productivity environment through better macro-economic management, provision of infrastructure, security and other measures, including funding and support of productivity efforts.
``The goal is to ensure improved and sustainable productivity improvement in the economy,’’ he added.
Mr. Innocent Agbo, chairman, Governing Council, National Productivity Centre, had earlier noted that the centre had refocused its programmes and repositioned itself to address myriads of productivity problems besetting the country.
He said the centre had intensified its programme of installing productivity and quality improvement programme in organisations.
Agbo said the programme was an interventionist scheme designed to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of ailing organisations for improved productivity.
He said the centre would soon present a draft document on national policy on productivity to the Federal Executive Council for approval, to provide the necessary roadmap for a sustainable growth of the Nigerian economy.
