How firms can become more competitive, by SON chief

FOR companies to increase their competiveness, they need to ensure quality control and improve customer services, Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Dr. John Akanya, said at the weekend.
Akanya, who spoke at the official presentation of certificates to six firms under the NALCOMET Group in Abuja, stressed: “The relevance of quality and continual improvement in the current competitive market environment, which focuses on customers’ satisfaction cannot be overemphasised.
“This is extremely important towards expansion of organisation’s local and export trade capabilities, increasing the competiveness of its services and products in the market and thereby, improving its image.
“The certificates are in conformity to the requirements of NIS ISO 9001:2008 quality management systems standard.
“In today’s business environment, the challenges of globalization are the driving forces for doing business and maintaining relevance at both national and international markets. Considering the ever-changing customer requirements and the role of competiveness in the global market, only organizations that have what it takes remain afloat in the precarious market.
This is the quality edge. Quality concept has gone beyond the physical, chemical, mechanical properties of products to include the management of the interaction between processes. An organization without an enduring and reliable system cannot survive for long especially when considering the challenges posed by changing needs of customer and continual competition in the market place,” he said.
Akanya stressed that the event was the first time SON would be presenting six certificates in one certificate presentation ceremony.
His words: “I would say that NAL- COMET Group is breaking a record and has entered into history for us in SON. By this achievement, NAL COMET Group has thus joined the lofty class of quality management system certified companies in Nigeria and globally. This is a giant stride in the pursuit of continual improvement in customers’ services. I most heartily congratulate you on this excellent milestone achievement.”
