Council of State meets on new minimum wage today

AS the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) warms up for a three-day nationwide strike over demands for a new minimum wage, there were indications in Abuja yesterday that President Goodluck Jonathan has summoned the Council of State meeting to deliberate on the matter and other national issues.

It was learnt that the meeting will review the recommendations of the Justice Alfa Belgore-led committee’s report on the minimum wage. It was further gathered that the report has already been packaged in form of a bill for onward transmission to the National Assembly for passage.
According to a source in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Justice Belgore will be expected to lead the discussion on the matter.

The source said: “Ordinarily, the bill ought to have gone to the Federal Executive Council (FEC) before it will be passed to the Ministry of Justice where it will then be fashioned in form of a bill. But these processes have been shortened by the Justice Belgore committee because their report is presented in the form of a bill that can go straight to the Council of State for onward transmission to the National Assembly for passage.”
