AMERICA has just had its mid-term (first half of a new presidency when members of the federal legislature are elected and or re-elected) elections and, again, in the outcome lies an enduring lesson for the rest of us on this side of the planet, in what democracy is all about: it always revolves around the people; it is about what the people want or do not want, about their will, the will of the voters, the electorate, not that of a few ‘strong men’ who would always want to hand-pick our leaders and representatives, whether we like it or not. In spite of President Barrack Obama’s suavity, not to say popularity, and President Bill Clinton’s incredible salesmanship on the rostrum, the Democratic Party lost the mid-term elections. In what has been described as a referendum on the Obama Presidency, especially as it relates to its handling of the traumatised American economy, the Democrats lost the House to the Republicans (who are gaining the majority in the House for the first time in four years), while narrowly retaining the Senate. Even then, a Republican won the Senate seat vacated by President Obama!
