‘We must protect our mandate in 2011’

President, Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin
The President of Women Arise, a non-governmental organisation, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, has called on all Nigerians to protect their mandate in 2011.

She said this at the Voters Awareness Assembly Programme, which took place in Lagos on Friday.

She said, “Remember what happened in Kano during the 2003 elections – Kwakanso had concluded his plans as a sitting governor against Shekarau but at every polling booth, the electorate stood their ground.

“After casting their votes they protected them. It became almost impossible to steal the people’s mandate; the people’s choice emerged winner.

“Mandate protection is the power of the electorate. It is a sure way of asserting the people’s will and this must be adopted in 2011.”

Recalling the nation’s failed attempts to conduct free and fair elections, Okei-Odumakin urged Nigerians to exercise their voting rights.
