Seized bombs: NCAA orders special screening of foreign cargoes

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has ordered a special screening of all cargoes coming into Nigeria from foreign countries, especially “suspected countries of security concern.”

The directive followed a recent security threat at the Lagos Port. Security operatives had, last week, seized 13 containers carrying rocket launchers, grenades and other lethal weapons at the Apapa Port, Lagos. The Federal Government subsequently ordered tighter security measures at the nation’s border posts.

A memo by NCAA to all security agencies at the nation’s airports, aviation agencies, airlines and ground handling companies, mandated the use of the Explosive Detecting System in the screening of all cargoes, in addition to the normal use of cargo X-ray screening machines.

The memo, dated October 30, 2010, and signed by the Director-General, NCAA, Dr. Harold Demuren, said the directive took immediate effect and would be in force “until further notice.”
