‘Nigeria Is Not Being Underdeveloped By The West, But By The Slaves Ruling Them’

ESKOR Toyo, the Octogenarian Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), a national Trustee of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) still traverses from Calabar to Maiduguri, presenting papers on national issues. Still alert and agile, he often speaks out louder to hit the nail on the head. He is called a Professor of Professors, not for of his socialist inclinations, but because of his ability to come out with new ideas and solutions to national questions.  Recently, he presented a paper in Calabar on ‘Project Nigeria: The Way Forward,’ as part of activities making Nigeria at 50, where he posited that in 1960, what Nigeria actually got from Britain was self-rule and not independence, as many believe. He has been living a quiet life in retirement, road to his bungalow residence is untarred and the house surrounded by a yam farm. Ostensibly a sign of his social inclination, he personally opens his gate to ushered his visitor into the sitting room, which is everything old-fashioned. No air conditioner or television, the floor ground is bare and devoid of any modern luxury, the study of open shelves is stuffed with modern and mostly archaic books, journals and publications in different files, held tightly together with ropes of different colours and sizes. The study is moderate enough to write a good lecture any day and he intermittently points to his bookshelves to point to some of his works, which he has no money to publish. He spoke further with DEBO OLADIMEJI on his distinction between a self-rule and independence, the project Nigeria, vis-avis his socialist inclination and other national questions.
How did we come to this sorry state, as a nation or country?
