Legislation, infrastructure may mar INEC’s e-Registration, voting exercise

EXCEPT the issue of legislation is resolved, needed infrastructure is provided, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) e-Registration and voting exercise may remain a tall order to achieve.
Specifically, going by a section of the Electoral Act 2010, Section 52 (1 a & b) forbids the country from conducting any election electronically for now. The Sub-section 1a states, “Voting at an election under this Bill shall be by open secret ballot.’ Sub-section 1b states, ‘the use of electronic voting machine for the time being is prohibited.”
This simply means that, it won’t be possible to deploy anything electronically for the forth-coming general elections going by the dictates of the law, except urgent measures are put in place.
Already, the positions of the lawmakers in the country have defeated the call for electronic registration or voting in the country and the issue of votes safety becomes a difficult one.
In the area of infrastructure, it is a trite fact that anything ‘E’ runs on technology- Power for example, but presently, the country is seriously beset with several infrastructural challenges, in which power remains the highest contender.
