Fifty-four members of the House of Representatives under the leadership of the Minority Leader, Mr. Ali Ndume, has purchased the first presidential nomination form of the party for the Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau.
The 54 members of the All Nigeria Peoples Party in the House who are drawn from the various states of the federation contributed N11 million to buy the party’s presidential nomination form for Shekarau, the current governor of Kano State.
Ndume said during a brief presentation ceremony at the ANPP headquarters in Abuja, on Wednesday, that their gesture represented a token of their contribution to the Shekarau’s presidential bid for the 2011 election.
He said the lawmakers contributed the money in appreciation of the efforts of the governor, who according to him, had rendered so much assistance to them.
Ndume also said the decision was informed by the conviction among the lawmakers about the leadership qualities of the governor.
Shekarau was instrumental to his appointment as a principal officer in the House.
He said, “This contribution is a token gift from us to the Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau.
“As governor of Kano State, Shekarau did so much for us as members of the House of Representatives and even the leadership of the House. He has been very active in supporting us. I am a leader because of his support.
“We want to collectively show our appreciation to Shekarau by purchasing this form for him, and we expect that he will be successful.”
Speaking also at the event, the National Secretary of the ANPP, Mr. Lawan Shettima, who represented the party’s National Chairman, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, said the lawmakers were motivated by the desire to effect change in the leadership of the country.
He added that the gesture from the lawmakers showed that Shekarau gave a kind of leadership that was cherished by the people.
Shettima said the ANPP under the leadership of Onu would ensure the conduct of free and fair primaries in the party, adding that ANPP was committed to the enthronement of internal democracy in its fold.
