SUNDERLAND yesterday at the Stamford Bridge shocked title holder, Chelsea, 3-0 on a day Arsenal defeated Everton 2-1 to climb to the second position on the league table.
Nigeria-born defender, Nedun Onuoha, who is on loan from Manchester City, opened scores for visiting Sunderland after waltzing through the homers’ defence just before half time, while Ghana international, Asamoah Gyan, added the second midway into the second half, before Danny Welbeck took advantage of an Ashley Cole over hit back pass to tap in the visitors’ third with three minutes to time.
Try as it could, Chelsea, captained by Didier Drogba on the night, could not find a way past the Black Cats’ defence even with four minutes added time. Earlier at the Goodison Park, goals from Bacary Sagna and Cesc Fabregas proved decisive as Arsenal held off an Everton fight-back to move second in the League with a 2-0 victory.
Sagna opened the scoring after 35 minutes with a ferocious strike from a tight angle and Fabregas doubled the lead early in the second half. Samir Nasri and Marouane Chamakh spurned glorious chances to add to the lead but Everton produced a thrilling finish and deservedly pulled one back through Tim Cahill late on.
With yesterday’s victory, Arsenal moved ahead of Manchester United into second, with only two points separating it from leader, Chelsea. Manchester United, which could only draw 2-2 with Aston Villa at the weekend a point below the Gunners in third place.
