FG ’ll not abandon ex-militants – Alaibe

Special Adviser to the President on the Niger Delta, Mr. Timi Alaibe
The Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Niger Delta Affairs, Mr. Timi Alaibe, on Sunday said that the Federal Government would not abandon the ex-militants undergoing training in various training institutions within and outside the country after their respective programmes.

Alaibe, who is in charge of the implementation of the Amnesty Programme, said the government would make available what he called ‘seed funds’ for the ex-militants to commence their businesses on the completing of their training programmes.

He said, for instance, that the ex-militants who were sent to Shongai, Port Novo in the neighbouring Benin Republic would be given money to start their farms in fisheries and other endeavours.

The president’s aide made the comment while speaking with journalists on the state of the Amnesty Programme and the state of peace in the Niger Delta in Abuja.

Alaibe, a former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, said the government had also brought in the Millennium Development Goals and the National Poverty Eradication Programme to make productive input into the process of the ongoing Amnesty programme.

According to him, those in charge of driving the Amnesty process were only awaiting the budget of the MDGs and NAPEP for the programme.

He said, “It (funding of trained militants) is part of the programme. We have brought in MDGs and SMEDAN, and NAPEP, on the table and they are going to come back to us with specific budgets that have been built for this purpose.
