Poor power supply cripples Lagos businesses

As the manager of Eagle Business Centre, Oye Oluleye, has spent a weekly average of N9 000 for the five months that there has been no light at his Broad street office on the Lagos island.
Though, the situation has continued for the affected shop owners in the area, including business owners in Odunlami and Alli streets, yet, the monthly electricity bills have kept coming.

"Even last month, they brought N7 000, out of which I have paid N3 000; electricity workers have not been friendly to us here at all. We also know that they have been asking shop owners to be contributing some money for them before giving us light, so they are doing this because we have refused to be giving them money," he said. "But this is not the first time; we also did not have light for three years between 2000 and 2002." Many Lagos residents and entrepreneurs, like Mr. Oluleye, have been experiencing difficulties and incurring additional costs brought about by the poor power supply.
While some residents blame a faulty cable or transformer for the problem, others are not just sure of the cause of the problem.
