NITEL workers protest at finance ministry

Angry former workers of the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL), and its mobile subsidiary, Mtel, yesterday protested at the finance minister’s office in Abuja because of their unpaid 30 months’ salary arrears.
The workers, in their hundreds, with placards, disrupted normal operations in the ministry for most of the day, as they sealed all entrances to the complex, thereby denying visitors and staff with vehicles from entering or exiting the office.
A spokesman for the protesting workers, who did not give his name, told journalists that government has continued to be insensitive to their plight, despite promises that the matter would be sorted out last month.
They accused Olusegun Aganga, the finance minister, of deliberately playing games with their welfare, even though President Goodluck Jonathan has given approval for the payment of their entitlements.
