THE stakes of re-election, especially for members of the National Assembly are getting higher. And as the cliché goes, they are leaving no stones unturned.
A few members of the National Assembly have forgotten how in 2003 and 2007 the National Assembly lost about 70 per cent of its members in the politics of re-election. It would appear that they have learnt their lessons and are not taking chances at all in their re-election bid in 2011.
Having failed in previous elections to stem the tide, the leadership of the National Assembly might have discovered a masterstroke in the latest amendment to the Electoral Act, which represents “a stone that kills two birds.”
The amendment will give the federal lawmakers a bargaining power with the Presidency and national leadership of political parties on one hand and the governors on the other with respect to securing re-election.
