Hail to the Falcons, champions of Africa

NIGERIA yesterday in South Africa beat Equatorial Guinea 4-2 to reclaim the African women football championship title, which it lost to the small nation two years ago.
Despite parading players from four countries of the world including Nigeria, Cameroun, Brazil and Equatorial Guinea, the Nzalang Nacional, failed to defend the African Women Championship (AWC), which they won last year in Malabo when they hosted the championship.
With yesterday’s scoreline, Nigeria’s Super Falcons, thus scored 19 goals, two of them own goals, and conceded three en route to winning their sixth title. The Falcons, which won the inaugural edition in 1998, also clinched it in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006.
Indeed, it was a glorious outing for the Super Falcons, who apart from emerging African champions once again and grabbing a World Cup ticket in the process, finished the tourney with the Fair Play Award. Perpetua Nkwocha got the highest goal scorer award with 11 goals, Stella Mbachu finished as the Player of the Tournament while Desire Oparanozie was awarded the Player of the Match award in the final match.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) flagship championship for women this year featured only one debutant, Twiga Stars of Tanzania, while the Super Falcons, Black Queens of Ghana, Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun and Banyana Banyana of South Africa have taken part in every single edition.
Meanwhile, it was also a moment of joy yesterday in Lagos as female and male disabled medal winners at the recent Commonwealth Games in India were rewarded with about N10 million, new cars, wheel chairs, food items and other provisions by the Synagogue, Church of All Nations. Gold medal winners got a car and N1 million each while those who got silver and bronze were given N500,000 each as well as other gift items.
