Military promotes over 200 officers
THE three Services of the Nigerian military – Army, Navy and Air Force – over the weekend announced the promotion of their senior officers.
The promotions followed the meeting of the respective boards of the Services – Army Council, Navy Board and Air Council last week.
The Navy Board blazed the trail, approving the promotion of 100 senior officers including the first female to attain the two-star General rank of Rear Admiral in the history of the Navy - Commodore Itunu Hotonu – who is currently the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Navy Post Service Housing Estate.
A breakdown of the promotions shows that 11 Commodores (equivalent of Brigadier-Generals) were promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral (Major-General), 33 Captains (Colonels equivalent) to the rank of Commodore; 30 Commanders (Lieutenant-Colonels equivalent) to the rank of Captain and 26 Lieutenant Commanders (Majors) to the rank of Commander.
For the Air Force, it promoted a total of 98 senior officers, including 11 Air Vice Marshals (Major-General equivalent), 36 Air Commodores (Brigadier-General equivalent), 31 Group Captains and 20 Wing Commanders.
The newly-promoted Rear Admirals and their present appointments include J.A. Akinwale (Chief of Administration, Naval Headquarters (NHQ), A.O.A. Ikioda (Chief of Logistics, NHQ), O.B. Ogunjimi (Navy Secretary, NHQ), Joe O. Aikhomu (Director of Logistics, Defence Headquarters) and I.E. Ibas (Chief Staff Officer, Naval Training Command).
Other promoted Rear Admirals also include Gabriel E. Okoi (Chief Staff Officer, Logistics Command), J.O.O. Olutoyin (Chief Staff Officer, Western Naval Command), I.A. Oyagha (Chief Staff Officer, Eastern Naval Command), J.N. Amaino Director of Development, Defence Headquarters and B.M. Mshelia (Commander, Central Pay Office).
Among the 33 Captains promoted Commodores include Director of Naval Information, Kabir Aliyu, Atiku S. Abdulkadir (Commandant, Defence Intelligence School), Mohammed M. Barau (Deputy Defence Adviser, New York), I.E. Iwuorie, M.O. Amoda, A.O. Odeh, O. Atewogboye, I.A.A. Ibuwariso, J.O. Okojie, M.A. Akpa, M.G. Boladale, Ejike R. Akanisi, M.B. Teibi, A.O. Onireti, M.I. Lekwot, D. Abikalio, M.D. Bobai, S.U. Ahmadu (Director of Accounts, NHQ), D.T. Yusuf, I.M. Mankilik and O.E. Osuagwu.
A statement by Aliyu said “the Commodores, Captains and Commanders will be decorated by their various Administrative Authorities, while the Rear Admirals will be decorated with their new ranks at a later date in Abuja.”
For the Air Force, those promoted to the ranks of Air Vice Marshals are Air Vice Marshal I.A. Balogun, Air Vice Marshal A. Adamu, Air Vice Marshal I. Umar, Air Vice Marshal E.E. Osim, Air Vice Marshal M.R. Morgan, Air Vice Marshal O.A. Idowu, Air Vice Marshal C.N. Chukwu, Air Vice Marshal A.A. Iya, Air Vice Marshal S.B. Abubakar and Air Vice Marshal A.I. Shehu.
The senior officers elevated to the ranks of Air Commodores are: Air Commodore P.C. Abel, Air Commodore B.B. Okunola, Air Commodore R.C. Pam, Air Commodore G. Truman, Air Commodore A.A. Malomo, Air Commodore F.B. Nyoyoko, Air Commodore A.G. Tsakr, Air Commodore E.N. Nzokala, Air Commodore C.T. Gudi.
Others promoted to the ranks of Air Commodore include B.M. Maiyafe, M. Umar, J.A. Gbamwuam, A.Y. Bello, S.B. Ribah, J.B. Adigun, M.C. Iloenyosi, K.O. George, G.M. Ilyasu, E.J. Ozoemena, Air Commodore A.A. Salau, E.O. Anebi, O.C. Oguejiofo, A. Shehu-Othman, E.C. Akogu, B.C. Iyang, A.O. Ogunjobi, J.O. Azubuine, E.E. Agwungwu, N.A. Balogun, D.A.F. Adeluoye, M.A. Mohammed, S.A. Zakari, N.A. Sanusi, A.A. Balogun and L.S. Alao.
The newly-promoted Group Captains are: Group Captain J.S. Dibal, Group Captain A.O. Imafidor, Group Captain H.B. Adamu, Group Captain I.U. Menuba, Group Captain T.K. Labesa, Group Captain L.E. Adama, Group Captain S.U. Bakari, Group Captain K.M. Igbitiri, Group Captain R.S. Bala and Group Captain I.E. Kalu.
Others promoted to the ranks of Group Captain are C.C.D. Jose, A.G. Abdullahi N.V. Aguiyi, E.J. Udenyi, E.F. Batnah, A.H. Amesinlola, B.D. Solomon, B.L.P. Keenam, A.I. Adamu, D. Ladan, L.I. Oluwatoyin, I.H. Etukudo, I. Daramola, S. Olatunde, E.D. Yinkere, P.O. Oahimire, S.E. Ogba, A.B. Abubakar, A.T. Marguis, S.W. Tupkop, and K.M. Umar.
For the Army, those who benefited from the promotion exercise include two General Officers Commanding (GOCs). The two GOCs promoted Major-Generals include Brig.-Gen. M.D. Abubakar (2 Division) and Brig.-Gen. K.T.J. Minimah (81 Division). Others include the Corps Commanders promoted Major Generals – Commander, Corps of Signals, Brig Gen OAC Ariahu, Commander, Nigerian Army Armoured Corps, Brig Gen AB Marwa and the Director of Military Intelligence (DMI), Brig Gen SY Audu.
Others promoted Major-Generals include the Commander, 23 Brigade, Brig Gen JO Nwaogbo, Deputy Commandant, National Defence College, Brig-Gen. O.S. Adeosun, Director, Army Finance and Accounts, Brig Gen AI Muraina and Chairman, Military Pensions Board, Brig.-Gen. B.T. Kwaji.
The Commander, Guards Brigade, Col. E.J. Atewe, was also promoted Brigadier-General.
