Adegoke dazzles at NNPC Junior Tennis tourney

FOURTEEN years old emerging junior tennis sensation, Sarah Adegoke, lived up to her billing when she comprehensively defeated Victoria Peters, 16, in the finals of the girls U-16 event of the NNPC Junior Tennis Championship.

Playing on the centre court of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, the Ibadan girl won the pro set 9-0 for the loss of only eight points. It was a clinical and focussed performance that had spectators wondering why she did not play in the boys U-14 event.

In other title matches, Indian talented eight-year old Terry Das confirmed his status as the best U-10 juniors when he overcame Kenneth Pyagbara from Port Harcourt 9-4. Pyagbara had also reached the final of the boys U-12 event, where he lost to Michael Osewa 9-5.

The Indian took an 8-2 lead and then weathered a fierce comeback effort to close out the match. The result, according to the organisers, underlined the depth of talent in the ITA Junior Circuit. Another outstanding performance came from Sylvester Emmanuel of the Co Foundation, who won both the boys U-14 and 16 titles.

Emmanuel beat teammate Michael Michael 9-4 in both matches. Michael had in the semi-finals beaten the Lagosian number one seed Adeniyi Olatunji 9-4.
The tourney is organised by the International Tennis Academy as part of the junior circuit aimed at producing a succession of players from the junior rank to the seniors.
