Short takes from MAMA 2010
D’Banj and Genevieve
The much talked about MTV Africa Music Awards have come and gone, but many people will not forget in a hurry how the event went.
It was a night of fashion, dance and plenty of fun.
Except for a few hiccups here and there, the MAMAs turned out to be a great event.
Life and Beat gives you some titbits from the event.
MAMA came late
Scheduled to start by 8 pm, the awards proper didn’t kick off up until 9.30 pm. However, there was really no dull moment all through the event.
Artistes explode
The 2010 MAMA awards opened with an explosive performance by Rick Ross, and closed with an unforgettable rendition of Win, featuring T-Pain, Ross, Da LES and Tuface. In keeping with the tradition of the awards, the show featured an array of electrifying collaborations between artistes from different parts of the continent, mixing up music genres, language and cultures in a unprecedented extravaganza. Among the collaborations were Nigeria’s Tuface, who teamed up with South African rock outfit, The Parlotones. The performance of Banky W’s Lagos Party, saw South Africa’s Big Nuz, Angola’s Cabo Snoop and Paul G and DRC’s Barbara Kanam rocking the house with a truly pan-African version of the hit track.
J Martins bounced!
No, he was not bounced at the gate. He was even one of the great acts at the event. His performance on the stage, as short as it was, brought life into the event as people screamed when he came on the stage.
But then, J Martins was bounced by one oyinbo man when he came on the stage to pick up an award on behalf of P Square.
P Square won the best group category of the awards, but for some reasons known to them, they weren’t present at the event.
Probably since he is one of the closest pals of P Square, J Martins walked to the stage to collect the award for them. However, it didn’t go down well with the white man, who refused to part with the plaque.
Genevieve and D’banj become an item?
The news all over the entertainment circuit is that actress, Genevieve, and D’banj, are in a romantic relationship.
D’banj claimed Genevieve was his girlfriend, but the actress has not come out to deny or admit that both of them are in a relationship.
But the two, looking so fabulous, presented an award together at MAMAs. D’banj, in public, gave Genny compliments on her looks as he looked at her adoringly.
Tuface makes incredible stunt
Just as Tuface got on the stage, the auditorium went haywire. People sure love Tubaba to the extent that one over-zealous fan beat the protocol and got on the stage as the singer was performing. That singular act earned him the beating of his life as the bouncers pulled him down and battered him.
That act might not have gone well with Tubaba. He got off the stage and joined the crowd, who threw him up and down till they finally ‘deposited’ him on another stage in the auditorium, where he continued his performance.
No MAMA for Banky W, Wande Coal
Career wise, this year has been so good to Banky W and Wande Coal. Despite having had a great outing in 2010, the two artistes were not able to pick any award at MAMAs.
Wande was nominated in two categories, but he lost to Tuface in the Best Make category. He lost to Daddy Owen in the best Anglophone category. On the other hand, Banky, whose video, Strong Thing, has wowed many, lost in the Best Video category to Congolese Fally Ipupa.
