Nigerians’ bad rating of the police is justified because officers and men of the force are not justifying the salaries they are being paid by the government, Inspector General of Police Alhaji Hafiz Ringim has said.
He said yesterday in Maiduguri while addressing his men after taking delivery of vehicles and gadgets donated by the Borno State government that the Federal Government was embarrassed by the level of performance of his men.
On the performance of the force to bring the Boko Haram who have continued to lay siege on Borno State to justice, Ringim said the police had performed shamefully and had no explanation to give Nigerians on why the notorious group is still at large and threatening law abiding Nigerians.
“Borno is one of the states in the North-east notorious for the menace of the Boko Haram. I will say it again, I have said it before, that it is a shame that almost two years after the Boko Haram attacked us in our barracks, our men and our families, nobody knows where these Boko Haram are coming from”, he said.
“It is a shame that they attacked us, they killed us, they raped our women, they did everything they wanted to do and today nobody can tell me Mr. X, Y and Z are members of the Boko Haram, this is where they gather and this is where they got their arms from and we are paying salaries”, he added.
The IG also said the police had all it takes not to be influenced by any politician or political party in next year’s election after the president has acceded to all that the force needs to carry out its lawful task during the exercise.
Ringim warned officers and men of the police force against supporting any political party during the general elections, saying, “you must not support any political party. We are an unbiased umpire. It is not our responsibility to participate in any unlawful act ranging from election rigging to ballot snatching. We must not allow ourselves to be used for any electoral offense,” he warned.
He said there was no running from the fact that the police in the country need to be re-organized as the force had performed below expectation which has made his men to receive the backlash of Nigerians and caused embarrassment for the government.
Ringim stressed that it is pertinent for police officers to rededicate themselves to the service of the country and to justify the salaries they receive.
Governor Ali Modu Sheriff while giving 30 Hilux pick-up vans to the police, commended the renewed effort of the force to check the Boko Haram insurgence.
