An elated secretary of the Rowing and Sailing Federation of Nigeria, Victor Anusa, who made known Imoke’s consent within the week, thanked the governor for coming to the aid of the  federation by approving the championship because this would be the first of its kind in Nigeria, and participants for the championship are expected to come in from within and outside the country.

President of the federation, Rear Admiral Festus Bikipre Igbehinadun Porbeni (rtd), gave kudos to the Imoke for supporting the federation with the championship promising that the federation would do everything possible to ensure that the championship was used as a launch pad for Nigeria to raise her status in the comity of top rowing and sailing countries of the world.

Aside the championship, Imoke is expected to formally launch the sailing boats donated to the state by the federation in furtherance of development of the sport there.

Anusa stated further that the rowing championship would henceforth be incorporated into the Calabar Carnival, held annually in the state capital in the month of December.

He stated that after the three-day championship, the International Canoe Federation and the Confederation of African Canoe would conduct a course and examination (theory and practical) for twenty qualified Nigerians in Calabar for ten days.

Secretary of the African federation, Kenya’s Seif Partua will lead other resource persons from Switzerland in giving lectures to the participants.

Participants who would write an examination after being exposed to theory and some practical lessons, would be presented with certificates after the course.
