human rights defenders was urges respect for by UN

AS the world marks the 2010 Human Rights Day today, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon has urged humanity to be inspired by those seeking to make our world more just and to remember that everyone, no matter the background, training or education, can be a human rights champion.

And at home, the National Human Rights Commission of Nigeria (NHRC) has called on Nigerians to become human rights defenders.

Meanwhile, a human rights group, Lagos State Civil Society Partnership (LACSOP) has urged the Lagos State governor, Babatunde Fashola to, as a matter of urgency, assent to Lagos Special Peoples’ Bill said to have been passed recently by the House of Assembly.

In his message for the 2010 Human Rights Day, with the theme “Human rights defenders, who act to end discrimination,” Ki-moon said the celebration is dedicated to human rights defenders around the world who are determined to make rights real in people’s lives by striving to protect their own rights and those of others.

According to him, human rights are the foundation of freedom, peace, development and justice, and the heart of the work of the United Nations around the world.

Ki-moon said: “This Human Rights Day is an occasion to salute the courage and achievements of human rights defenders everywhere – and to pledge to do more to safeguard their work.
