threaten by Gunmen on the family of slain guard

The family of late Rotimi Fakoya, the commander of the Mainland Vigilante Group who was killed by unknown gunmen on Saturday, have called on the state government to provide security for them in the wake of threats from the suspected killers.
Mr Fakoya, 52, and Fatai Hassan, 53, were shot dead about 4.15pm at Odu-Ifa, Ibadan Street, in Ebute-Metta, where they were on routine security check of their neighbourhood. The head of the Fakoya family, David Fakoya, said the children and wives of the deceased are being threatened by the same unknown gang which killed both men. He also urged the state government to find the killers.
“Our brother is a very peaceful and dedicated vigilante man and his death is a sign of the failure of the government to protect the lives of innocent people.
“When he saw the level of crime in his neighbourhood, he decided to volunteer with some other members to give security to the populace. He was a bold man and despite the numerous threats he has received from the hoodlums, he remained undeterred in fighting crime,” Mr. David Fakoya said.
Need for protection and support
Olubunmi Fakoya, one of the wives of the deceased, said her husband lived an exemplary life. “He has two wives and eight children and the youngest child is just six months old. None of us his wives is working, and he has an aged mother, who he was responsible for.
“The family needs protection because these same unknown gun men may unleash terror on us at any time, and we need police protection. He was a wonderful husband and father, and we are in dire need of support from the government now that our bread winner is no more,” Mrs. fakoya said.
The eldest son, Deji Fakoya, 20, also urged the government to come to their aid.
“My father was a good man and he taught me to be hardworking and to put others first in whatever I do. “Despite the danger involved in his job, he still managed to cater for everybody. I will miss him and his dedication to the protection of lives and property. I have written JAMB. Who will provide my school fees and other things that I will need for school? My younger ones are also just going to secondary school. The burden will be too much, and we will be grateful if the government and the philanthropists who love security and a crime free society can come to our aid. Our lives are in danger and the government should provide security for us,” he said.
There has not been an official comment from the Lagos State Police Command concerning the gruesome murder of the two vigilante members. When contacted, Frank Mba, the spokesperson for the Command, said he is yet to be briefed on the incident.
