The establishment of Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTEC) and Imo State University (IMSU) brought a revolution in educating as many Nigerians as possible, through the instrumentality of state-owned universities.
The duo of late Samuel Onunaka Mbakwe, former Governor of the old Imo State and Chief Jim Ifeanyichukwu Nwobodo of the old Anambra, the proponents of the agitation that led to the creation of these institutions intended that they would serve as breeding grounds for eggheads from the South Eastern part of the country. Critics and admirers of the two former governors however agreed that the benefits of the initiative have been far-reaching.
Actualisation of the dream demanded all hands on deck, however. It was consequent upon this that the likes of Professor MJC Echeruo, Gabriel, Umezurike, Professor Josiah Anuna, Professor Ben Iro among others, disengaged from the first generation universities to midwife the two state universities.
Interestingly, the vision of Mbakwe and Nwobodo has given birth to five state universities in South East Nigeria.
