Somi… The globe is her sound turf

THE sound of jazz blended beautifully with the gentle flow of the lagoon and the serene candour of the new wing of the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, provided the right ambience for the day-two of the Lagos Jazz Series last weekend. Renowned artistes selected from home and abroad were on the bill, and the congregation of lovers and aficionados of the musical form was high in spirit.This day was particularly lucky; the weather was clement –– unlike the previous day when heavy downpour nearly marred the opening –– with cool breeze flowing from the Lagoon.
I was there on high – expectant of soaking all the stress of the day up in the tonic of jazz. More so, I was hunting out a young African lady I had been told and read so much about. I had been told she was a ‘bomb of sounds’ from one of my readings on the net; and I was on instruction to track her down…
Sound check by the musicians done, the audience that had patiently waited out the tiresome check wormed into the groove… soaking it all up, and rewarding the artistes with generous applause.
Then came Somi, and the session was never the same again – at least for me. She came on and on with that incredible energy and the voice filled the atmosphere, colouring the mood of the lagoon. She hooked me to her completeness as a performer. Thought I was alone until the congregation exploded in claps and cat-calls in response to her first act…
