PSN faults NAFDAC over open drug markets

Nigeria to join polio emergency scheme
THE Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Lagos Chapter, has condemned the inability of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to shut down open drug markets across the country.

The open drug markets at Idumota, Lagos; Onitsha, Anambra; Aba, Abia) and Kano City, Kano states are believed to be the major sources of fake drugs in the country.

Alleging that Director General (DG), NAFDAC, Paul Orhii, has performed below par by failing to curb the resurgence of fake food and drugs in the country, the PSN called on President Goodluck Jonathan to sack the DG from NAFDAC “in public interest.”

Orhii had said last week: “It is difficult for NAFDAC to shut down open drug markets at Idumota, Kano, Onitsha, Aba and others because the agency does not regulate the premises but the drug that is sold… closing down open drug markets is a very tricky matter.”
