THE Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) will not achieve its mandate of competing on the global stage until it gains operational independence from government, its Group Managing Director (GMD), Austen Oniwon and the first GMD
of the corporation, Festus Marinho, have said.
They spoke at the weekend in Abuja at the first interactive session with all
former GMDs of the corporation.
Marinho, who ran the corporation between July 1977 and April 1980 said that successive governments interventions had negatively affected the business aspects of the corporation.
He also expressed the hope that when passed by the National Assembly, the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) would reduce the number of laws guiding the
operations of the oil corporation.
