The politics of new minimum wage

BARRING last minute ditch effort by the Federal Government to stave off the impending strike, the two labour centres – Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), will roll out their arsenal by midnight today to press home their demand for the implementation of the new minimum wage.

Indications that the impending strike could be averted appeared blurred at the time of filing this report, as government’s posturing did not suggest anything tangible was on the table to stop Labour from carrying out its threat.

Nigerian workers, as represented by the Labour centres are miffed by the posturing of government on the minimum wage, which was further aggravated by the reported position of the National Council of State which said another committee be raised to examine the workability of the N18, 000 minimum wage.
