For motorists in Lagos, this is not a good time to ply roads in the state as virtually all the roads are bad. But since people must go out of their homes to search for their daily bread or keep appointments, they are forced to leave their homes.
Parts of the effects of this is that most motorists now spend a lot of money to maintain their vehicles, spend a lot of man-hours on the roads, while commuters pay more on transportation.
Although governments often claim that money is being spent to maintain some of these roads, PUNCH METRO findings showed that most of the roads in the metropolis are death traps.
Some of the roads visited by our correspondents are Ayobo-Ipaja; Alimosho; Ikotun-Egbe; Abeokuta Expressway; Oshodi-Apapa; Gbagada Estate; Ajegunle end of Ikorodu Road and Charity in Oko-Oba, Agege.
Others are Isawo, Ori-Okuta, Ojuoro Ikorodu, Ajelogo, Agbede, Bariga, Odogunyan-Odo Kekere, Alapere, Iju-Ishaga and Salami Giwa.
A motorist, Mr. Sunday Olajide, told one of our correspondents in Ikotun area of the state that the bad roads were an indication that governments at all tiers had failed.
On Ipaja-Ayobo Road, a commercial bus driver, Tope Ajobiewe, said the road was simply a death trap.
He said, “Ayobo-Ipaja road is too bad. We are just managing it. Our vehicles break down at will. If you buy a new vehicle today, I bet you, by tomorrow, you will start to hear a funny noise under the vehicle.
“Starting from Shagari Estate gate down to Ayobo, there is no road. What we have is an express replete with deep holes on the road with weeds taking over the drainage channels. They just managed to repair one side, which is Baruwa inside, but the place is bad again. Private car owners now prefer to board commercial buses. ”
He urged the government to repair the road on time to reduce the burden of motorists and commuters.
As for Ade Adeniyi, a commercial bus driver on the road, his experience was that of agony, noting that Ipaja to Ayobo was a no-go area.
