AGAINST the backdrop of striking realities on the worsening housing problems in developing countries and the alarm that by 2030 almost five billion people will live in urban areas, experts have urged government to provide legislation and housing finance that would create a viable property market in the country.
Coming through an international colloquium on law and development tagged the Kuramo Conference, experts at the summit re-examined critical issues pertaining to human settlements and development, and sought to proffer solutions to them.
High on the agenda were the issues of housing and development, especially in future planning for housing and urban regeneration as well as options for sustainable mortgage financing in Nigeria.
The President, United Kingdom-based Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), Prof. Paddy Gray urged the state government to address pressures around housing provision. “Government is responsible for creating a functioning housing market through legislation and regulation around housing, land and housing finance rather than a direct provider of housing.”
