WAS the carrying out of a demolition exercise by state officials at a private estate in Lagos an effort at beautification or the prelude in a move to acquire the property?
This was the recurring question at the weekend as controversy trailed the demolition of structures at Oyadiran Estate, a large private estate in the Sabo area at Yaba, in the Mainland Local Government Area, where owners of the plot and Lagos State government officials are now locked in dispute over the exercise.
Though the ownership of the property was initially not in dispute, yet clouds have been gathering in respect of the legality or otherwise of the action as the contending parties challenge themselves in court over the conduct of the demolition exercise.
While the lawyer to the family of late Samuel Adisa Oyadiran, Messrs Destiny Obun Takon & Co., have alleged that officials from the Lagos Ministry of Environment attempted to “steal their clients land at Oyadiran Estate under the guise of environmental violation,” government officials on the other hand have accused the occupants of the area of illegal squatting and constituting an environmental nuisance.
